Over the past decade and a half, I‘ve been privileged to have an awesome opportunity to go to BYOC LAN’s, Festivals and Studios of the Unsubscribed Podcast. Because of this maintaining my systems, keeping a constant connection regardless of location and being mobile capable have been most paramount. Things gathered to assist in this beyond the obvious, laptop, cable(s), portable monitors and the iFixit Kit, are systems that had to be setup for the best connections to things like storage servers at home. Considering a money saving setup vs a costly setup was a no brainer in that the costly, more expensive setup gave me better bandwidth, 24 hour response from custom service and static IP’s over a dedicated line. The offset of this setup actually saved me a ton of money in that I could generate large files on the go and transfer them to storage across the continent. Saving me tons of money in mobile storage. Being that I could transfer large files back to the home servers, this also allowed me to setup VM’s (Virtual Machines) to connect to remotely and not only transfer large files but also edit them within the VM. This saved money as now I became capable of running a cheap laptop for traveling which we all know makes it easier to damage something like a laptop. For whatever reason, the more expensive the laptop, the more prone mine have been to breaking.
Spending $5k on a server to run ESXi on as a Type-1 hypervisor that I could remote to anywhere, has lasted well over 15 years and shows no signs of slowing down anytime soon. There has been a change of memory, unfortunately one brand just didn’t make it past 10 years where as the Samsung memory is still rock’n! Personally, I’d say with all the upgrades I’ve done on my consumer PC’s and hardware, $5k is nothing, especially considering the length of time it has lasted.
